Lokananda ( Lawkananda ) Pagoda

The Golden Stupa.

Similar to other the Lokananda ( Lawkananda ) Pagoda is covered with countless plenty gold leaves. Even used on the bell, devotees come every day to add some more. Built in 1059 the bell already show the characteristic elongated profile, the base and the crown show the main features of the iconographic pagoda.

The shrine is a typical architectonic product of local style, a fusion of a temple (lower part) and a stupa (upper part). Every day people of Bagan are sitting around and try to sell all kind of local made stuff to the tourists.

Busy traffic on the Irrawaddy River at the foot of the pagodas

Lokananda Pagoda from a different perspective

The architectural design of the Lawkananda Pagoda shows some indication of the transition between old Pyu and the newer Bagan style. On the bell are a few decorative elements as you can see at the pictures it is a rather simple design.

In the eastern tazaung is a sandstone Buddha sculpture of almost 2 meters high. The earthquake of 1975 damaged the shrine but not much. Today it is a preferred point for local women to sell various fruits and souvenirs because of the proximity of the Irrawaddy there is busy life, read more.

Bagan Pagodas are plenty and amazing monuments.

Although the shape is always more or less the same there are some differences in design, size and colors, which can be white, golden and bare brick. But whatever it is this Buddhist shrines are visually overwhelming. It needs to mention that there are distinctive difference between them ans temples. The main is into a pagoda nobody can walk in into the temple they can.

Bagan Myanmar and the Ayeyarwady River

The Lokananda Pagoda is a great Shrine from over thousand years ago.

Considering the nature force such as monsoon flood and earthquakes it is really amazing why they haven't been washed away long time ago. Since a few decades now a continuous restoration is on the way. But that is a Sisyphus task since they don't know how to isolate the brick work from the rain which means after a few years the walls will get black again.

Pagoda and Temple City

Probably one of the best about the Lokananda ( Lawkananda ) Pagoda is the location which makes a great visual impression.
