Bupaya Pagoda

According to the legends the stupa was built during the reign of King Pyusawti.

Since the river makes a bend here it was also considered a navigation point. The name came because he had the area cleaned from gourd-plants and the stupa has a shape of a pumpkin. The name finally means Bu in Myanmar language = pumpkin and paya stands for pagoda (stupa).

It is not very clear when the structure was actually built.

Some say around AD 170 other point to style marks from the 9th or 11th Century. Actually it might have been the continuous renovation after the monsoon floods. Which blended different periods together; this is common with all sacred buildings in the country.
